The story which follows was written in 1950 by Winnifred E. He made several trips from History of James Monroe Puffer, father of Ephriam Puffer, Grandfather of Jasper Puffer of Beaver, Lawmen of our town and County. He helped to survey and charter the Bering Straits for Uncle Sam. Later he joined the Navy and became a great sailor. Immediately upon leaving his home, Jim, who was big for his age, secured a job for two years as a cabin boy on the Coast Schooner. After seven lung years his mother recieved the first letter from him and this letter was kept in her trunk for many years until fire1 destroyed the house and all belongings. Sounds pretty severe punishment to us now days. The last time Tisdale saw his son James Monroe, he was running through the orchard at North Adams, leaving home to escape punishment from his Dad who held a buggy whip in his hand. The first Puffer emigrants came to America in 1622. His parents were Tisdale Puffer and Rosina Alcena Amidon. James Monroe was the fifth child of a family of ten. George knew Jim for many years and told me how he enjoyed as a boy of 14 years leaving home early in the morning to follow and trail Jim all day on the mountains hunting and fishing. goes the credit for most of the information I will give.
